Sesame Seeds Milk [Horchata de Ajonjolí]

If you are tired of almond or cashew milk and you happen to like the rich flavor of sesame seeds, I have a treat for you. This recipe really really easy (especially if you take the shortcut), high in fat and really flavorful. It’s usually recommended by the ol’folks down in Puerto Rico for nursing mothers, not only because its high Calcium and lecithin, good fats and good quality protein content, but also because it’s believed to reduce the mother’s stress, thus generating better quality and quantity of milk. In my case, as an adult male, I’m not after this last quality, but I just love sesame seeds, and it’s always good to have more alternatives to milk. This is how I make my own Sesame Seeds Milk or Horchata de Ajonjolí.

Once again, this recipe was made with a shaker bottle in mind.

  1. Let's make tahini! Place your sesame seeds in a pan over a low to medium heat until golden. This will enhance the sesame flavor. Don't let them burn. Let them cool down to room temperature. Then, grind up the seeds until you get an oily paste with the consistency of peanut butter. You can do this using a mortar and pestle, or you could also use a coffee grinder. Alternatively, you can just buy a jar of already made tahini, that's what I do most of the time anyways. That is the shortcut I was talking about.

  3. Blend it. Add the tahini in a blender with all the other ingredients and/or flavorings you want. Sometimes I. You can also use an inmersion blender to do this.
  4. Serve chilled. If you made it in a shaker bottle... Just enjoy it.
